When I was a small child I loved to visit with my grandmother, who lived in a small town not far from our home. Part of why I enjoyed visiting was because she spoke to me with loving kindness but also in a way that did not diminish me as a child. Some people “dumb things down” for kids. My grandmother would never do that. She spoke to me of mature things in mature ways and equipped me to observe the world around me and then be able to communicate my observations eloquently. She also had cool stuff in her home, like wooden blocks of various shapes and sizes that I would play with, building and stacking them in precarious ways and seeing if I could defy gravity as I did so. Her home was filled with antique furniture that was brought over from the “old country” by her parents and the energy of these pieces of furniture was palpable! I have one of those pieces of furniture in my home and absolutely love it. It brings back such fond memories.
One of the things that her home always had was a horseshoe above each entrance, set in a U position. One day I asked her why they were there. She told me that when we bless a horseshoe and hang it in such a way, it acts like an energy cup that gathers good energy (health, wealth, abundance and so on) into the home. The strength of the horse is also infused into the horseshoe, which then serves to strengthen and solidify protection for the home as well as strengthening family ties.
This explained to me why my mother also had the horseshoe talisman above the doors of our home as well. They had just always been there and I had thought nothing of it. But that day that I asked my grandmother about it I had made a connection that she had them, and my mother had them, and so why? What were they for? How many others in our family or community have them? and so on. Of course, she could not speak to what others did or did not have in their homes, but at least I got a good explanation of why our family did such a thing. When I moved out of our family home the first time my mother presented me with a gift for my housewarming. It was a set of horseshoes. I was so touched by this and for years they hung above the entrances of my home, no matter where that home was. Then one day I came home and found that they were gone. My wife at that time did not understand the importance of them and thought them to be “ugly” and not fitting with the rest of the design of the home, so she got rid of them. Needless to say, that marriage did not last.
Recently I was able to receive another set of horseshoes and infused them with particular medicines. That is something that is completely allowed by the way. We can also decorate the horseshoe talisman and make it our very own. I choose things that have energetic meaning to me to adorn the horseshoe talisman. So you will find particular beads and feathers and such attached. These serve to enhance the energy of the talisman. And the location (front door or back door) will help me to decide what type of energy I want to have present as folks enter.
Overall, since hanging the horseshoe talismans above my doors the energy of our working and living space has exponentially increased and the flow has been enhanced. The family unity has been increasing, even amidst some challenges that have been presenting themselves over the last few months. That horse medicine certainly seems to be having quite the positive effect! I would recommend this for anyone, magical practitioner or not, to use to help the energy of their home and their family. Try it out. You will see.
